Curriculum for Wales

Education in Wales is changing with the introduction of the new Curriculum for Wales. Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera-Bro Dur has been at the forefront of this curriculum development as an Innovation School. It is through this journey that we have developed a clear vision for our innovative, challenging and engaging curriculum.

Our Curriculum for Wales Vision

Facilitating learners’ individual journeys across the 3-19 continuum to realise the Four Purposes of the Curriculum for Wales is the main driver of our curriculum planning at a whole school, departmental and classroom level. By the end of their time at Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera Bro Dur, our learners will be:

  • Ambitious, capable learners who are ready to learn throughout their lives.
  • Enterprising, creative contributors who are ready to play a full part in life and work.
  • Ethical, informed citizens who are ready to be citizens of Wales and the world.
  • Healthy, confident individuals who are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

At the heart of our curriculum vision is our school motto, ‘Dysgu Gorau Dysgu Byw’ – ‘the best learning is learning to live’. Our curriculum has been designed to develop confident, resilient and capable lifelong learners who are equipped with the skills and knowledge to become valuable contributors to society.

Our broad and challenging curriculum is centred on recognising learners as individuals, with unique interests and varied experiences and our goal is to expand learners' horizons to realise their personal and unique successful futures. By creating a culture of personal excellence that challenges and supports learners to develop holistically, our aim is that learners will take ownership of their own learning by celebrating their successes and recognising the next steps to continue to progress.

Equally as important in our curriculum is encouraging learners to have pride in their ‘cynefin’ (local area) and developing an understanding of the factors that have shaped their area and influenced their own personal identity. The new curriculum at Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera-Bro Dur roots learners in their local area, while encouraging them to look beyond for opportunities, expanding their horizons and developing them as the Welsh of the future.

We have important values and aspirations at the heart of our vision. At Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera, we…
